New Year’s Work Resolutions to Keep…You Happy!

March 9, 2023

For better or worse, 2022 brought about some critical conversations about work. It was the year of Quiet Quitting, the aftermath of The Great Resignation, and the year many of us finally put a name to our burnout.

Culturally, the last year has indicated a shift in perspectives on how we work and how far we should prioritise the very act of working. As such, there are many crucial learnings that both employees and businesses should keep in mind if they’re going to cultivate a positive relationship with work into the New Year.

In this newsletter, we’ll be exploring what resolutions you need to make (and stick with!) to keep up with these new trends and attitudes.

Reevaluate Your Time

Whether you’re an employee or a business owner, your time is precious—and we don’t just mean during office hours. Use the New Year to reassess how you distribute your time. Could you improve your work/life balance? Are you taking on more than your fair share? Are you shouldering the burdens of your business rather than asking others for help? Are you overpromising in the hopes of getting things done, rather than setting realistic expectations and goals?

All this affects your time and, in turn, your happiness and quality of life. Usually, there are ways we can alleviate at least a few hours for ourselves here and there, but you need to take that first step and raise it, rather than hoping it will resolve itself.

Find Kindred Spirits

We feel better when we’re surrounded by like-minded people who share our passions and enthusiasm for life. We take this sort of thing for granted in our friendship groups, but we should be prioritising these kinds of relationships in our work life as well.

If you’re a business owner, hire people for their character rather than their skills. You can teach the latter, but you can’t change the former. If you’re an employee, make sure you have an element of passion for what you do and the people around you. You don’t have to love every day you spend at work, but if you don’t love any days there, it’s probably time to shake things up.

Become More Culturally Aware

Cultural awareness and intercultural relationships are not only becoming increasingly common as a result of globalisation, but they’re also becoming more crucial to our everyday working lives. Gone are the days when businesses could cater to one predominant culture and let the rest scramble to keep up. To create a truly positive work environment, everyone must have equal footing.

That said, cultural awareness should not be a chore—it should be an adventure! The act of learning about other cultural nuances and implementing them to make a truly inclusive workplace is hugely rewarding. A business that is multicultural in its recruitment but also its thinking is - typically - a happy one.

If you’re able to implement these three lines of thought into your New Year’s resolutions, we can practically guarantee that you’ll achieve a better relationship with work.
